SUMMARY AND NEXT STEPS: Organizations as structures and bureaucracies

Summary

Students learned about organizational design, bureaucracy, and hierarchy this week. The class learned about the internal and external expectations placed on institutions. Human relations can make or break an organization, so it is essential to understand how the organization's design informs its operational success or failure. Students also learned about the legal and political bureaucracy universities must manage. When students enroll, the courts have ruled that there is an extra duty placed on institutions to ensure safety and security.

Next Steps

Next week, we will explore the role of governing boards, local government, politics, and outside entities and how their influence impacts higher education operations, strategic planning, and overall functions. In recent years, the line between internal self-governance and legislative governance has become more blurred. The class will explore the intended roles and what happens when the roles are not followed or come into conflict with each other.

Student groups should continue preparing for live in-class session presentations. Ensure your selected article has received prior approval and determine who within the group will submit
